Get To Know The Team - Orlaith
Orlaith
Accountant
Hi, I’m Orlaith, and I’m currently a third-year Apprentice Accountant at Doherty Group. I joined the team in August 2024, shortly after finishing my A-levels, and I’ve really enjoyed developing my skills and gaining hands-on experience in accountancy.
After completing my A-levels, I decided to take the apprenticeship route rather than going straight to university. I’ve always enjoyed learning, but I also love being able to put that knowledge into practice. For me, an apprenticeship offers the best of both worlds – gaining valuable experience, working towards a qualification and earning while you learn. It’s been a great way to build my confidence and develop practical skills alongside my studies.
My role involves a variety of responsibilities, including dealing with account queries, processing invoices, payroll and carrying out bank reconciliations. No two days are the same, which is something I really enjoy. Working alongside an experienced team has also allowed me to apply what I’m learning to real situations and continue building my knowledge.
Before joining Doherty Group, I worked part-time at The Wild Duck in Portglenone, where I’ve spent the past five years. I absolutely loved working there and still help out from time to time! Hospitality taught me valuable skills in teamwork, communication and working under pressure, all of which have been useful in my current role.
One of my favourite things about Doherty Group is definitely the people. Everyone is so friendly, welcoming and always willing to help. There’s a great balance between working hard and having a bit of fun along the way, which makes it such an enjoyable place to work. Being able to learn from people with so much experience has been a huge positive for me.
Outside of work and studying, I love keeping busy and active. I play camogie and do hyrox training, so there’s always something keeping me on the go! Between work, studying, training and the occasional shift at The Wild Duck, I don’t have much spare time, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue developing my career in accountancy. My main goal is to complete my degree and hopefully become a Chartered Accountant in the future. I’m also looking forward to seeing Doherty Group continue to grow and being part of that journey.
I’m really grateful to be part of such a supportive team and excited to see what the next few years bring!
